Addictions are one of the most widespread problems in the world. Substance abuse is the third leading cause of death in the U. S. Addictions include the use of illicit drugs like cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamines, as well as prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs. Sugar addiction, alcohol, cigarettes, and other legal substances are problems as well. Outside of substance addictions, behavioral addictions like sex addiction to pornography, gambling, video gaming, “love” addiction, etc. involve millions of people and billions of dollars. Unfortunately treatment success for addictions is generally dismal and relapses have been common, until now.

Family and social factors can play a major role in addictions. If there is a “co-addict” who enables the person’s addiction, this can be corrected. Detoxification from the addictive source is often necessary in order for treatment to work. Developing the ability to overcome social influences like peer pressure may be important. The addict’s readiness to make the change can be helped through ETT®.

Scientists have now identified the exact parts of the brain involved in the brain’s addictive process. However, the findings have not been directly applied to psychotherapy, until now. ETT® uses specialized interpersonal processes whose outcomes are radically amplified by precise visual brain stimulation. This allows therapists to target and change the specific parts of the brain and neurotransmitters involved in addiction. This results in the elimination of craving and relapse.

Conventional wisdom about addictions is that once a person becomes an addict, they are an addict for life, and one must continually try to overcome it. This suggests that addictions are genetic. However, scientific discoveries from the Human Genome Project have shown that genes are generally not fixed and their expression is changeable by environmental influences, especially psychological ones. Therefore, if optimal psychosocial factors are used, genetic expression regarding addictions can change.

In addition to changing genetic expression, scientific research has revealed that a process called memory reconsolidation can permanently change unwanted core emotional memory that would otherwise continue to exist for life. This core emotional memory is the underlying cause of conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addictions. The new method of  (ETT®) is an efficient means to rapidly facilitate memory reconsolidation. When ETT® eliminates the core emotional memory responsible for addictions; preliminary findings have shown a long-term alleviation of addictions, without relapse.

This treatment method is unlike any other addiction approach. This presentation will include case studies, lecture, discussion, and a forum for questions.

Changing the Way the World Detects Cancer

By Jenny Hrbacek, RN

prima

The typical annual physical in the United States might include a mammogram, Pap test, or PSA count. These tests screen for reproductive cancers only. Occasionally, a colonoscopy may be ordered which looks in the large intestine, but does not examine the small intestine where cancers can also develop.

By the time a mammogram, for example, can pick up a breast cancer, it is often far enough along that the patient is immediately whisked into surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. Screenings are not the same as prevention. In some circles, screenings are described as “trolling for business” because they are not sensitive enough to offer true early detection for prevention.

Yet true early detection tests exist, and are readily available, if patients know to ask for them. These tests are much more sensitive and can detect cancer years before the lump or bump is diagnosed by more common means. These tests also detect a wide range of cancers. Depending upon the test, they can give an early warning for kidney, bladder, thyroid, uterine, and brain cancers; non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; pancreatic cancer; leukemia and more.

One of the ironies of human nature is that we tend not to change our ways until we have to. An early warning that cancer cells are circulating in our blood stream can be the incentive necessary for people to change their diet and work with an integrative practitioner who can establish a preventive protocol – perhaps intravenous vitamin C with Poly-MVA, and the use of curcumin or metformin to address cancer stem cells.

DetectingCaner

The more sensitive cancer tests available also play a big role in managing the post-treatment patient. Cancer patients who have completed their standard regime of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation need to know if their cancers are receding or growing. Typically after treatment, oncologists use standard tumor marker tests. If an elevation is seen with a tumor marker, a PET scan is ordered. The patient is subjected to carcinogenic radiation and the test results are often used to justify starting treatment again. Now the cancer is usually more aggressive and harder to treat.

The real danger of a repeat episode of cancer is metastasis. Statistics tell us 90 percent of people who get a recurrence of cancer die within five years. We now have the ability to see a metastasis coming much earlier than when the tumor has grown big enough to absorb enough radioactive glucose to light up on a PET scan.

areyousure_Jenny Hrbacek, RN, is the author of Cancer Free! Are You Sure? A Guide to Early Detection Tests.

Some early detection tests find substances present in the blood when cancer is present. For example, we can now test for the ENOX 2 protein which is found only on the surface of a malignant cancer cell; this protein is not found in the blood of a person without cancer. We also can test for thymidine kinase (TK) levels which go up significantly when there is a rapid amount of cell division, a hallmark of cancer’s growth. Other tests look for carcinoembryonic antigens and phosphohexose isomerase (an enzyme implicated in metastasis).

Additionally, we are moving beyond the idea that chemotherapy is a one-size-fits-all treatment. Oncology is evolving to a more personalized approach and we now have the ability to test a blood or tissue sample against the many possible chemo drugs available to see which ones would be most effective, and not expose patients to the toxicity of those drugs which won’t be effective for their particular cancer.

We can also use a blood sample to test which of more than 40 natural, biological therapies will be most effective for each person. The list ranges from artemisinin and ascorbic acid to metformin and mistletoe.

It is very common that once cancer gets a foothold, it progresses for 8-10 years before it is detected. New advances in technology bring us a new era, one that will change the way cancer is detected. The great news for patients is that this kind of early detection will not focus just on treatment, but also on interventions to prevent a formal diagnosis.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and was told the surgery and chemotherapy she undertook would make her cancer free. Jenny began to research cancer and testing and learned she was not cancer free, and that there were many options besides waiting every 6 months for the standard tumor marker tests. She now teaches and consults with cancer patients. She can be reached at www.cancerfreeareyousure.com.

“Most people eat so poorly pre-cancer, it is hard for them to believe that food is one of the most powerful tools for awakening the cancer warrior within.”

- Dr. Constantine A. Kotsanis, MD.

“When you give your body real nutrition, it awakens a healing force unmatched by anything in medicine – yourself. Drugs and surgery remove and shrink the cancer, but it is still your body that must heal itself and keep healthy for the years to come.”

If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed with cancer, you are probably overwhelmed with the information you are receiving from doctors, friends, books and the Internet. Many new patients are so focused on treatment plans and side effects, that they don’t explore all their options or even think ahead to what happens if they survive the chemo. They forget that their body – and their cancer – is part of a complete mind-body package called “me.”

Our clinic focuses on people with cancer or for people who are concerned with prevention to learn about the healing power of nutrition and how to use mindful eating as one of the tools in the anti-cancer arsenal. We cover the latest research on nutrition in the treatment of cancer.

We also use a treatment known as Insulin Potentiation Targeted Low Dose Therapy. “At the Institute, we call this ‘kinder, gentler, more compassionate cancer treatment,” notes Dr. Kotsanis. “It combines modern medicine with nutrition and allows for lower dosages of chemo.”

According to Dr. Constantine A. Kotsanis, MD, Director of the Kotsanis Institute, a research and treatment facility that combines medicine and nutrition, reclaiming your life from cancer takes healing on a cellular and spiritual level as well.

Pollution…Toxic Waste Chemicals in the environment…in your home, in your yard. All of these combined can overwhelm your immune system. For some people, these contaminants can trigger reactions. Keep in mind, some individuals are much more sensitive to chemicals than other people.

Young children in particular can be more sensitive to toxins than adults. Children, especially those toddling and crawling, live and play close to the ground. After indoor spraying, research shows that the level of pesticides in the air one foot above the floor in three times the concentration found in the adult’s breathing space.

It has been questioned that the levels of pesticides allowed on foods is based on what an adults would intake. Most children ingest more fruit and juice than the average adult, and possibly receive more than the acceptable percentage for their body weight.

Water is a resource usually taken for granted. It may also contain pollutants and chemical additives. Even though chemical additives are added for a specific purpose, there are those that find their way into the water supply accidentally.

There are safe alternatives available for people who want to protect themselves and their environment by using positive, constructive solutions. Substitutes can be found for most chemicals used in the home. Organic lawn treatments can now be found at most nurseries. Air and water purifiers can be installed in your home and work very effectively. New ways of protecting our families form chemical exposure are surfacing daily. The Kotsanis Institute addresses these problems daily with chemical sensitive patients in their allergy treatment program.

For more detailed information and resources for help, please contact the Kotsanis Institute at 817-481-6342, or call to schedule a free tour of the facility.

Can aging cells be recharged, leading to new vitality and better overall health? With an increasingly popular technology called pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs), healthier and younger-acting cells may be possible.

Thousands of people in more than 40 countries have used PEMFs to improve their health or promote healing. In fact, PEMFs have been used for decades to treat a wide range of medical conditions, from broken bones and swollen tissues to depression and more. The results can include:

  • Less pain and inflammation, with some acute and chronic pain disappearing completely
  • Reduction in the effects of stress on the body
  • Improved energy and sleep quality
  • Better circulation, blood pressure, and blood and tissue oxygenation
  • Improved uptake of nutrients, cellular detoxification and cell regeneration
  • Balance for the immune system
  • Faster repair of bones and tissue injuries
  • Muscle relaxation

So how does this technology work? And can it help you?

In the last few years, the public has become increasingly interested in antioxidants. This is because researchers have learned more about oxidants, also known as free radicals, and how they can be destructive for living tissues.

When the body begins to break down due to aging, illness or injury, oxidants are the first chemicals to appear. If they are not addressed, antioxidants activate other chemicals, causing a cascade that can create significant damage to the body.

By neutralizing free radicals, the body can enjoy better health over time. PEMFs can increase the effectiveness of antioxidants existing in the body up to 100 times. In other words, this therapy can accelerate healing and make it easier for antioxidants to attack free radicals – and win.

All energy is electromagnetic. This is because all atoms produce electromagnetic fields. Therefore, the cells and chemicals in the body generate electromagnetic fields, and they use electromagnetic frequencies to communicate with one another. These fields are unique, and each organ in the body produces a recognizable, signature bioelectromanetic field.

When the electromagnetic energy in cells becomes disrupted, cells and tissues become unhealthy. PEMF treatments can address this problem by penetrating the cells, tissues, organs and bones. PEMFs induce electrical charges around and within the cell, activating and regenerating them with increased blood supply and oxygen pressure. As they pass through the cells, PEMFs stimulate the electrical and chemical processes, reinvigorating tissues and organs.

Depending upon the area of the body being treated, PEMFs use a variety of settings. They are used for a short period of time. PEMF therapy is FDA-approved to fuse bones. In addition, some devices have been approved for the reduction of joint pain and swelling.

Specialized health care providers can offer the latest PEMF technology. To find out more about PEMFs and how they can help you heal, contact The Kotsanis Institute in Grapevine at 817-380-4992.

Constantine Kotsanis, M.D. and his staff at Kotsanis Institute combine traditional mainstream medical care with complementary medical treatment methods for a dynamic individualized approach to patient health. It is his passion for the practice of helping patients that keeps Dr. Kotsanis at the forefront of medical innovation.

Originally from Greece, Dr. Kotsanis' family immigrated to Chicago when he was a teen.  He is an alumnus of Northern Illinois University and a graduate of medical school at the University of Athens.  His residency in otolaryngology was completed at Loyola University in Chicago, where he met his wife Beverly.

Dr. Kotsanis has been in practice in the DFW area for over 30 years. He is a board certified otolaryngologist (head and neck surgeon) and otolaryngic allergist and is also certified as a clinical nutritionist.  Dr. Kotsanis' practice combines the best of traditional medicine, functional medicine and nutrition.  This way of practicing medicine is called integrative medicine - a practice method that seeks to optimize your health, wellness, and the anti-aging process.

Dr. Kotsanis' medical practice represents the best of medical innovation -blending the relatively new discipline of modern conventional medicine with the age-old, time-tested wisdom of older disciplines to craft unique treatments for each patient.  He has added methods such as homeopathy, nutrition, acupuncture, and structural medicine to conventional medical practice to benefit each of his patients.

All patients come to Kotsanis Institute with a unique set of symptoms, conditions, circumstances and needs. During the diagnosis process, Dr. Kotsanis listens carefully as patients explain their medical history.  He asks questions to learn more about them.  Next, he performs a physical examination and a series of diagnostic tests to determine specific treatment needs. He and his well-trained team then analyze the interactions of genetic make-up, environment, lifestyle and diet to provide a highly customized treatment strategy that addresses the root causes of illness, chronic condition or disease.

The individual treatment plan Dr. Kotsanis creates helps patients reach specific health goals and serves to elevate their health and wellness.

“I strongly believe that the human body represents the ultimate biosphere and ideally all of its systems are in dynamic balance.  But if one of the work horses – endocrine (hormonal) system, immune (defense) system and the metabolic/digestive system – are not in sync, attaining optimum heath becomes a challenge.  Treating symptoms is only one part of the equation and to truly elevate heath and wellness, the whole body must be considered,” says Dr. Kotsanis.
