SPCA of Texas Introduces New Foster Program

SPCA of Texas Introduces New Foster Program

Become a Foster Hero and Save Lives

The SPCA of Texas is excited to introduce changes to the SPCA of Texas' Foster Program, that will make it even easier for people to help homeless pets by fostering them. The SPCA of Texas is seeking Foster Heroes to open their hearts and homes to animals in need. By becoming a Foster Hero, people will be providing one animal with a comfortable, loving home while allowing another animal to take the foster's place at the shelter. The SPCA of Texas has foster opportunities to suit any lifestyle, and provides training and all of the supplies needed for foster pets, so all fosters have to do is bring the love! There are three types of fostering, including Adoption Ambassador, Trust Building & Socialization and Healing & Comfort.

Adoption Ambassadors foster adoption-ready animals and help them find their forever homes. This part of the program is currently available for dogs only, but plans are in place to add other pets at a later date. Adoption Ambassadors work to find their fosters forever families by promoting them online, taking them out on the town and bringing them to SPCA of Texas adoption events. They will receive training on the adoption process, so that when they find their foster's perfect family, they can facilitate the adoption themselves. The average foster time is expected to be 2-3 weeks. People can also Borrow-a-Buddy by taking a dog out of the shelter for a short amount of time, such as an afternoon at the park or sleepover in their home.

Trust Building & Socialization fosters provide a safe, loving environment for pets with difficult pasts and help them gain trust in people. Many of these pets have been brought in through the SPCA of Texas' Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit from situations of cruelty and neglect. These pets tend to be very fearful or shy, lack socialization and don't know how to be a pet yet. The pet's mental and emotional health can deteriorate in the shelter environment, while experiencing life in a home environment can improve their behavior. Trust Building & Socialization fosters will receive training on the behavior of their foster and proper socialization techniques. The average foster time varies depending on the pet's behavior, but is expected to be 6-8 weeks.

Healing & Comfort fosters provide animals the loving care and attention needed in a home, rather than a kennel. There are a wide variety of pets needing this type of foster, including mothers and litters, kittens or puppies that need to gain weight or are too young for adoption, unweaned puppies and kittens needing bottle feeding and animals of all ages that need rest to recover from sickness or surgery. This includes Fospice—Foster Hospice—care for sick or geriatric animals needing a comfortable place to live out their life. Healing & Comfort fosters will receive training on how to care for the medical needs of their specific foster pet.

It's easy to become a SPCA of Texas Foster Hero, so now is the time to jump in! There is no cost to join, and there are options for everyone regardless of housing, work schedules or other pets. Training and all of the supplies needed will be provided, so all people have to do is give the tender loving care the pet needs. To become an SPCA of Texas Foster Hero, please visit www.spca.org/foster to sign up. After submitting an application, new fosters will complete an online orientation and begin receiving foster requests via e-mail. If a foster sees a pet they are interested in fostering, they can contact SPCA of Texas staff to arrange bringing the foster pet home.
