Local Fencer Qualifies for Junior Men’s Epee World Cup Team

When Conor Shepard went to his first epee fencing class five years ago, he really enjoyed it. Now, he is a world-class fencer and is making history.

A senior at Grapevine High School, Shepard, 17, is the youngest fencer to ever win a Division 1 Men’s Epee event at a North American Cup (NAC) event. The event was held in Virginia Beach in November 2012 with 264 epee fencers from all over world.

He also completed in the Junior Men’s Epee World Cup in Sweden in January and finished 12th. These events combined to provide the points necessary to secure a place on the Junior World Fencing Team. Connor will travel to Croatia in April to compete in at the World Team Championships. The last time a fencer this young qualified for the World Team was in 1994.

Conor is currently the No. 2 overall epee fencer in the Junior Men’s division. He has been training with Coach Mohamed El Sakhawy at the Gold Blade Fencing Center in Southlake.
