During its weekend services on September 7 and 8, Gateway Church will honor fallen Grapevine Police Officer Darren Glenn Medlin andall first responders as part of the church’s annual Patriot Day weekend ceremonies. In 2002, September 11 was designated as Patriot Day, a time for Americans to honor first responders and remember those who were killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Gateway’s tribute will include a moving video story in memory of Officer Medlin, the only Grapevine police officer ever killed in the line of duty. The video will also show how the Grapevine Police Department has served the Medlin family for the past 15 years since Officer Medlin’s death. The family of Officer Medlin and several officers from the Grapevine Police Department are expected to attend the tribute at Gateway’s 4 pm service on Saturday, September 7, at its Southlake Campus.
Grapevine Police Sergeant Bobby Smith says, “My hope is that this story can help our department continue to honor and recognize those who have gone before us, and this video can help keep Darren’s memory and his sacrifice alive for decades to come—for those who follow behind us. Thank you, Gateway Church!”
Gateway’s weekend ceremonies in recognition of Patriot Day are a reflection of the church’s motto, “We’re all about people.” The tribute to Officer Medlin, the Grapevine Police Department, and all first responders exemplifies Gateway’s core value of serving others. The hope is that the tribute will inspire and encourage all first responders and let them know they have the community’s unwavering support.
