GHS Senior and Award-winning Author Addresses Heritage Middle School

Grapevine High School (GHS) senior Vivek Pandit, 17, shared his love of learning and the lessons he learned while writing his first book, We Are Generation Z: How Identity, Attitudes, and Perspectives Are Shaping Our Future (Brown Books Publishing Group) with students and staff at Heritage Middle School (HMS) as well as GCISD Director of Humanities Dr. Suzanne Newell on Friday, Dec. 11.

Pandit is an ordinary senior at GHS who walks down the halls wearing sneakers and headphones, plays football and takes AP courses, and can now add “Award-winning Author” to his college applications; Generation Z  has already won the 2015 Moonbeam Children’s Book Award in the Youth Author category.

What began as journal his freshman year, evolved into Pandit’s first published book. It’s an insider’s perspective on what it’s like to be a part of his generation—Generation Z. As they stand on the brink of adulthood, Pandit explains his unique generation and how they’ve been shaped by their relationship with technology.

So, how does a regular teenager with a full course-load and extracurricular activities manage to write an award-winning book?  “I think the key to
successfully keeping up with everything is to think about the future,” says Pandit.  “I tend to think about what I can do now that will make my life easier in the long run. For example, if I can perform to the best of my ability in the classroom, won’t that prepare me for college and beyond? If I can get through the demands of football now, won’t that make future demands easier to cope with? The way I see it, the more I can learn now through experience, the more likely I will reach my goal, which is to become the best of my potential. Instead of looking at all the small, annoying steps, I look at what I ultimately want to reach. Picturing goals makes everything I do have a purpose and therefore easier to manage.”

Pandit’s highest hope for the future is to inspire others and, in turn, to be inspired by them, in order to create a better life in a world that is often dominated by negative media. It appears he’s well on his way to achieving that goal. “Often, students don’t realize that their voices as writers have the potential to be shared with an audience beyond their classroom walls,” said Newell in a statement on the GCISD website. “Vivek demonstrated, in his talk with these students at HMS, that this is a myth. The idea that anyone can write a book, they just have to put their mind to it, is one that could have a profound impact on those students who were able to hear Vivek speak – only time will tell!”
