The Grapevine Police Department has a New Year's resolution for you: take precautions to prevent your car from being stolen or burglarized.

A vehicle is burglarized every two and half minutes and a vehicle is stolen every five minutes in Texas, according to GPD.

Police have some simple suggestions to help reduce these thefts:

• Lock your car. Almost half of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked. 
• Take your keys. 20% of stolen vehicles - keys were left in vehicle. 
• Hide your valuables.  
• Park in well-lit or congested areas. Thieves do not like witnesses. 
• Never leave your car running unattended. Provides thieves an easy getaway.
